FPV Stacks & AIO (FC+ESC)

An FPV Stack is an integrated set of key drone electronics components, usually consisting of two boards mounted on top of each other: the Flight Controller (FC) and the 4-in-1 Electronic Speed Controller (ESC) board. Sometimes, a VTX transmitter might also be included in the stack. The main idea behind a stack is to simplify the drone build process and ensure component compatibility.

Advantages of choosing a ready-made FPV stack:

  • Guaranteed Compatibility: You can be sure that the FC and ESC from the same manufacturer (e.g., SpeedyBee, Holybro) will be fully compatible regarding pinout and communication.
  • Simplified Assembly and Wiring: Stacks often use convenient ribbon cable connectors or well-thought-out solder pad layouts, minimizing the amount of soldering needed to connect the FC and ESC.
  • Easier Frame Fitment: Components in a stack are designed to take up minimal space and fit standard mounting hole patterns in FPV frames (e.g., 30.5x30.5mm or 20x20mm).
  • Potentially Better Value: Buying a stack (FC + ESC) is often slightly cheaper than purchasing these two components separately from the same manufacturer.
  • Consistent Feature Set: When designing a stack, the manufacturer ensures that the FC's features (e.g., number of UARTs, BECs) work well with the ESC's capabilities (e.g., telemetry).

When choosing an FPV stack, you need to consider the combined parameters of both components (FC and ESC) to match it to your drone and needs:

  • Mounting Hole Pattern: Most important! It must match your frame: 30.5x30.5mm (standard for 5"+ frames), 20x20mm (mini/micro, popular in 3-5" frames), or 25.5x25.5mm (standard for Whoops/Toothpicks).
  • Flight Controller (FC) Parameters:
    • Processor: F7 or H7 for best performance and support for the latest Betaflight/INAV features.
    • Gyroscope (Gyro): Check the IMU model (e.g., MPU6000, BMI270).
    • Number of UARTs: Ensure there are enough ports to connect your RC receiver, VTX, GPS, etc.
    • Additional FC Features: Built-in Barometer (for altitude hold), Blackbox (flash memory for flight data logging), Bluetooth/WiFi (for wireless configuration, e.g., in SpeedyBee stacks).
  • ESC (4-in-1) Parameters:
    • Continuous Current Rating (A): Must be sufficient for your motors and props (approx. 20-30% headroom recommended).
    • Firmware: Preferably BLHeli_32 for best performance and features.
    • Input Voltage (S Rating): Must match your LiPo batteries (e.g., 4S, 6S).
    • ESC Telemetry: Useful feature for sending ESC data to the FC.
  • Connector Compatibility: Check if the stack uses a ribbon cable connector or requires soldering connections between FC and ESC.

An FPV stack is a convenient solution, but choosing the right model still requires analyzing parameters. Wondering which SpeedyBee or Holybro stack is best for your 5-inch frame? Do you need an F7 or H7 processor? What ESC current rating will be safe for your motors?
