RC Radio Control

Welcome to the section dedicated to ExpressLRS (ELRS) – currently one of the most popular and rapidly developing open-source RC control systems, dominating the FPV world and gaining recognition throughout the modeling community. At Avifly, we focus on providing equipment compatible with this modern standard.

Why is ELRS so highly regarded?

  • Excellent Range and Signal Penetration: Utilizes LoRa modulation ensuring great performance even in challenging conditions.
  • Low Latency: Crucial for precise control, especially in FPV.
  • High Packet Refresh Rates: Translate to smooth and responsive control (up to 1000Hz in 2.4GHz mode).
  • Open Source: The system is developed by the community, guaranteeing rapid development, feature availability, and support from many hardware manufacturers.
  • Configurability: Ability to customize many system operating parameters to your own needs.
  • Affordability: ELRS hardware is often more competitively priced than other long-range systems.

The basic elements of the ELRS system are the RC Radio (Transmitter) (e.g., RadioMaster with built-in or external ELRS module), the Transmitter Module (TX), and the RC Receiver (RX) mounted in the model.

The ELRS system operates on two main frequency bands and also offers the innovative Gemini mode. How do they differ?

  • ELRS 2.4GHz:
    • The most popular option, offering the highest refresh rates (up to 1000Hz) and lowest latency.
    • Provides very good range, sufficient for most FPV applications (freestyle, racing, mid-range).
    • Antennas are smaller and easier to mount.
    • May be more susceptible to interference in environments with many 2.4GHz signals (WiFi, Bluetooth).
  • ELRS 868MHz (EU) / 900MHz (e.g., US):
    • Offers the best range and penetration through obstacles (trees, buildings) due to the lower frequency. Ideal for Long Range flights.
    • Maximum refresh rates are lower (typically up to 200Hz), and latency is slightly higher than 2.4GHz.
    • Antennas are physically larger.
    • Important: Hardware for 868MHz and 900MHz modules is often identical, but requires flashing the appropriate region-compliant firmware (in Europe, the 868MHz band is legal).
  • Gemini Mode (ELRS Dual-Band):
    • The latest innovation in ELRS, using both 2.4GHz and 868MHz bands simultaneously for signal transmission.
    • Provides maximum link redundancy and reliability. Even if one band is interfered with, the other continues to work.
    • Requires specific Gemini-capable hardware (TX module and RX).
    • Combines the advantages of both bands, ideal where link reliability is the absolute priority.

The choice of frequency depends on your flying style: 2.4GHz for low latency and high refresh rates (racing, freestyle), 868MHz for maximum range and penetration, Gemini for uncompromising reliability.

At Avifly, we focus on providing proven hardware compatible with the ExpressLRS system. In this section and its subcategories, you will find:

  • RC Radios (Transmitters): We offer popular radios from the respected manufacturer RadioMaster (e.g., TX16S, Boxer, Zorro, Pocket models), which feature built-in multi-protocol or dedicated ELRS modules, or an external module bay. They run on versatile EdgeTX/OpenTX software.
  • RC Receivers (ELRS): A wide selection of miniature and efficient ELRS receivers (for 2.4GHz and 868MHz) from leading manufacturers such as BetaFPV, HappyModel, Radiomaster, and others. Available with various antenna types and connectors.
  • Transmitter Modules TX (ELRS): External ELRS modules (e.g., in JR or Nano standard) to be mounted in radios lacking a built-in ELRS transmitter or to achieve higher output power.

Remember to always check the ELRS version compatibility between the transmitter module and receiver, as well as the antenna connector type.

The ExpressLRS system offers tremendous capabilities, but its configuration (binding, firmware updates, setting power levels, refresh rates) can seem complicated at first. Wondering which radio to choose for ELRS? Which receiver is best for your drone? How does Gemini mode work?

Our team at Avifly will gladly help you understand the nuances of the ELRS system and select the appropriate equipment. Contact us – details are on the Contact Us page.
