5S LiPo & LiHV Batteries

5S batteries (5 cells connected in series) represent a less common, yet still encountered voltage standard in the FPV and RC world. They offer a nominal voltage of 18.5V (LiPo) or approx. 19.25V (LiHV), placing them right between the commonly used 4S and 6S packs. Full charge reaches approx. 21.0V (LiPo) or 21.75V (LiHV) respectively.

5S packs (LiPo and LiHV) are chosen for more specific applications:

  • In some FPV drone configurations: Sometimes in 5-inch or larger (6-7 inch) frames, as a compromise between 4S and 6S weight/performance, or when using components (motors/ESCs) with specific parameters.
  • In RC airplane models: Particularly in some faster models or scale replicas, as well as some electric ducted fan (EDF) jets.
  • In RC boats and other vehicles requiring voltage around 18-20V.

Capacities of 5S packs vary, often ranging from approx. 1300mAh to 3000mAh and more. The standard power connector is XT60, although XT90 might appear for very high currents. The balance connector is a 6-pin JST-XH. LiHV versions require a compatible charger. We offer 5S packs from proven brands like GensAce/Tattu, although their availability might be lower than 4S and 6S.

Choosing a 5S battery requires special attention, as it's a less standard voltage:

  • Voltage Compatibility & Motor KV: This is absolutely crucial! Thoroughly check the specifications of ALL components (FC, ESC, motors, VTX, camera) to ensure they are rated for 5S voltage (max approx. 21V for LiPo, approx. 21.75V for LiHV). Many popular parts are designed for 4S or 6S and could be damaged by 5S. Motor KV must be appropriately chosen – lower than for 4S, higher than for 6S with the same propeller.
  • Cell Type (LiPo vs LiHV): As with other formats, LiHV (charged to 4.35V/cell) can offer a slight power/runtime bonus but absolutely requires a charger with LiHV mode and even greater attention to equipment voltage compatibility.
  • Capacity (mAh): Choose based on your model's requirements (drone, plane, boat) and the balance between runtime and weight.
  • Discharge Rate (C rating): Match to the peak current draw of your specific 5S powertrain configuration.
  • Connector: Usually XT60, possibly XT90 for very high-power applications.
  • Weight and Dimensions: Ensure the pack fits in the model and doesn't adversely affect its balance.
  • Availability: Keep in mind that both 5S batteries and compatible components (especially motors with suitable KV ratings) might be harder to find than the popular 4S and 6S options.

The decision to use 5S should be driven by specific project requirements where neither 4S nor 6S is optimal.

Safety when handling LiPo/LiHV batteries is absolutely paramount! Improper handling poses a real fire risk. Always follow these rules:

  • Charging: ALWAYS use a microprocessor charger designed for LiPo/LiHV with balancing function (balancing is mandatory for 5S!). NEVER leave charging batteries unattended. Charge in a fire-resistant location (e.g., in a LiPo Safe bag, on a ceramic/metal surface). Never charge damaged, puffed, or deformed packs. Use correct charger settings (cell count=5, LiPo/LiHV type). Recommended charge rate is 1C unless the battery manufacturer explicitly allows higher.
  • Usage: Avoid over-discharging cells (generally don't go below 3.3V-3.5V per cell under load, resting voltage ~3.7V for LiPo, slightly higher for LiHV). Monitor battery voltage via OSD or telemetry. Land when voltage is low. Protect batteries from physical damage and punctures.
  • Storage: For longer storage (several days or more), charge/discharge LiPo/LiHV to storage voltage - approx. 3.80-3.85V per cell. Use the 'Storage' function on your charger. Store in a cool, dry place, ideally in a special LiPo Safe bag or ammo can. Do not store fully charged or fully discharged for long periods.
  • Disposal: Never throw LiPo/LiHV in regular trash! Discharge them fully (e.g., using a light bulb or charger's discharge function to a low voltage) and take them to a designated battery recycling facility.
