2S LiPo Batteries

2S LiPo batteries consist of two Lithium Polymer cells connected in series. In the standard LiPo version, the nominal voltage is 7.4V (fully charged approx. 8.4V). 2S LiHV versions are also available, charging to a higher voltage (approx. 4.35V/cell, meaning ~8.7V for the pack), offering additional power. The 2S voltage is a popular step up from 1S, offering significantly more dynamics with low weight.

2S LiPo/LiHV packs are often chosen to power:

  • Larger and more powerful Whoops: E.g., drones in the 75mm or 85mm class (like Mobula8) with more efficient motors.
  • Toothpick class drones: A very popular power source for these ultralight and agile builds (2.5 - 3 inches).
  • Lightweight 2.5-3 inch Freestyle/Cinematic drones: Providing sufficient power for acrobatics or smooth shots in small frames.
  • Some RC planes and cars.

The capacities of 2S batteries typically range from approx. 300mAh to 850mAh (or more in specific applications). They are most commonly equipped with an XT30 power connector and a 3-pin JST-XH balance connector. Remember that LiHV packs require a charger that supports this mode. We offer 2S packs from respected brands like GensAce/Tattu or BetaFPV.

When choosing a 2S LiPo or LiHV battery, ensure it's suitable for your drone and expectations:

  • Voltage Compatibility: Check that your drone's electronics (FC, ESC, motors) are rated for 2S voltage. For standard LiPo, this is max 8.4V; for LiHV, max approx. 8.7V. Using LiHV in equipment not rated for the higher voltage may lead to damage.
  • Cell Type (LiPo vs LiHV): If choosing LiHV, ensure your charger has the appropriate charging mode. LiHV packs might offer a slight power advantage but require careful usage.
  • Capacity (mAh): The key trade-off between flight time and weight. In lightweight 2S builds, every gram matters. Popular ranges are 300-450mAh (light Toothpicks, Whoops), 450-650mAh (more powerful 3-inch builds), and above 650mAh for longer flight times on frames that can handle the weight without losing agility.
  • Discharge Rate (C rating): Powerful 2S motors with aggressive props can draw significant current. Choose a pack with a sufficiently high C rating (e.g., 50C - 100C) to avoid excessive voltage sag and ensure the drone has adequate power.
  • Connector: Ensure the battery connector (most commonly XT30) matches the connector on your drone.
  • Weight and Dimensions: Compare the weight of different packs with the same capacity. Check if the battery physically fits in its designated spot on the frame.

Cell quality plays a role – packs from GensAce/Tattu and similar brands often offer better current delivery and longer lifespan.

Safety when handling LiPo batteries is absolutely paramount! Improper handling poses a real fire risk. Always follow these rules:

  • Charging: ALWAYS use a microprocessor charger designed for LiPo with balancing function (balancing is mandatory for 2S and higher!). NEVER leave charging batteries unattended. Charge in a fire-resistant location (e.g., in a LiPo Safe bag, on a ceramic/metal surface). Never charge damaged, puffed, or deformed packs. Use correct charger settings (cell count=2, LiPo/LiHV type). Recommended charge rate is 1C unless the battery manufacturer explicitly allows higher.
  • Usage: Avoid over-discharging cells (generally don't go below 3.3V-3.5V per cell under load, resting voltage ~3.7V for LiPo, slightly higher for LiHV). Monitor battery voltage in OSD during flight. Land when voltage is low. Protect batteries from physical damage and punctures.
  • Storage: For longer storage (several days or more), charge/discharge LiPos to storage voltage - approx. 3.80-3.85V per cell. Use the 'Storage' function on your charger. Store in a cool, dry place, ideally in a special LiPo Safe bag or ammo can. Do not store fully charged or fully discharged for long periods.
  • Disposal: Never throw LiPos in regular trash! Discharge them fully (e.g., using a light bulb or charger's discharge function to a low voltage) and take them to a designated battery recycling facility.
