Lithium Polymer (LiPo) batteries are the primary power source for virtually all FPV drones and many other RC models. Their popularity stems from their excellent energy-to-weight ratio, enabling dynamic flights and acrobatics. Each LiPo pack consists of one or more cells connected in series ('S' designation). The nominal voltage of a single LiPo cell is 3.7V (fully charged approx. 4.2V). Key parameters describing a LiPo battery include:

• Voltage / Cell Count (S): E.g., 1S (3.7V), 4S (14.8V), 6S (22.2V) - determines the drone's power.
• Capacity (mAh - milliamp-hours): Defines how much energy the pack stores; affects flight time.
• Discharge Rate (C rating): Indicates how quickly the battery can safely deliver current.
• Power Connector: Most popular in FPV are XT30 and XT60.
• Balance Connector: Used to equalize cell voltages during charging (standard JST-XH).

Choosing the right LiPo battery is crucial for the performance, flight time, and safety of your FPV drone. Pay attention to:

• Voltage (Cell Count 'S'): This is the most important parameter! It must match what your drone's electronics (flight controller, ESCs, motors) are rated for. Using too high a voltage (e.g., connecting 6S to a 4S drone) will irreversibly damage components! 1S is standard for TinyWhoops, 4S and 6S for 5-inch drones (6S is becoming dominant), and even higher voltages (built from Li-Ion cells) are found in long range.
• Capacity (mAh): Higher capacity means potentially longer flight time, but also a heavier battery, negatively affecting agility and handling. Choose capacity based on drone size and preferred flight style (e.g., 300-650mAh for 1S Whoops, 1300-1800mAh for 5-inch 4S/6S freestyle, 2000mAh+ for long range).
• Discharge Rate (C rating): Indicates the maximum continuous current the battery can safely deliver (Current [A] = C Rating * Capacity [Ah]). It must be high enough to meet the peak demand of the motors at full throttle. Too low a 'C' rating will cause voltage sag, poor performance, and can damage the battery. Higher 'C' (e.g., 75C, 100C, 120C) is generally better but often means more weight and cost.
• Main Connector: Must match the power lead on your drone. Most common are XT30 (on smaller drones) and XT60 (standard on 3-inch and larger).
• Weight and Dimensions: Check if the battery physically fits on the drone frame and if its weight is appropriate for the build.

Cell quality matters greatly – batteries from reputable brands like GensAce (Tattu) often offer more stable voltage under load and longer lifespan.

Safety when handling LiPo batteries is absolutely paramount! Improper handling poses a real fire risk. Always follow these rules:

• Charging: ALWAYS use a proper microprocessor LiPo balance charger. NEVER leave charging batteries unattended. Charge in a fire-resistant location (e.g., in a LiPo Safe bag, on a ceramic/metal surface). Never charge damaged, puffed, or deformed packs. Use correct charger settings (cell count, LiPo type). Recommended charge rate is 1C unless the battery manufacturer explicitly allows higher.
• Usage: Avoid over-discharging cells (generally don't go below 3.3V-3.5V per cell under load, resting voltage ~3.7V). Monitor battery voltage in OSD during flight. Land when voltage is low. Protect batteries from physical damage and punctures.
• Storage: For longer storage (several days or more), charge/discharge LiPos to storage voltage - approx. 3.80-3.85V per cell. Use the 'Storage' function on your charger. Store in a cool, dry place, ideally in a special LiPo Safe bag or ammo can. Do not store fully charged or fully discharged for long periods.
• Disposal: Never throw LiPos in regular trash! Discharge them fully (e.g., using a light bulb or charger's discharge function to a low voltage) and take them to a designated battery recycling facility.
