6-7 Inch & Larger FPV Propellers

This section is dedicated to the largest propellers used in the FPV world, sized 6 inches, 7 inches, and larger (8", 9"+). These are specialized propellers designed to work with large motors (24xx - 31xx class) and intended for building platforms with specific purposes.

The main applications for large FPV propellers include:

  • Long Range drones: Where the priority is maximum aerodynamic efficiency, allowing for the longest possible flight time and covering large distances with minimal energy consumption.
  • Cinelifter platforms: Stable drones designed to carry heavier cameras (e.g., full-size GoPro, 360 cameras, even light mirrorless cameras), requiring high and stable thrust.
  • Heavy-Lift drones: Machines for special tasks, carrying non-standard payloads or large battery packs.

These propellers feature a profile optimized for efficiency at lower RPMs. Although 2-blade props were traditionally dominant in long-range (due to efficiency), 3-blade versions are becoming increasingly popular, offering smoother flight and better control, which is especially valued in cinelifters. They typically have a standard 5mm mounting hole. Leading manufacturers in this segment include Gemfan, HQProp, and T-Motor.

Choosing 6-inch and larger propellers requires focusing primarily on efficiency and matching the specifics of large drones.

  • Size (6", 7", 8"+): The choice depends on the frame's capabilities and the power/KV of the motors. 6 inches is a popular step up from 5 inches, offering greater stability and efficiency. 7 inches is a very popular choice for dedicated long-range platforms. Sizes 8 inches and larger are used in specialized heavy-lift and very long endurance drones. Remember that larger props are heavier and less responsive.
  • Pitch: Generally, a relatively low pitch is chosen to maximize efficiency at cruising speeds. Precise matching of pitch to motor KV and battery voltage (usually 6S or higher) is crucial for operating in the optimal efficiency range (g/W). Higher pitches may be needed on heavy cinelifters for more thrust.
  • Number of Blades (2 vs 3): In long-range flights, where every minute counts, 2-blade props were traditionally preferred for potentially highest efficiency. However, 3-blade props are gaining popularity due to smoother flight, better control, and lower vibrations, which is crucial for cinelifter platforms, often at the cost of slightly shorter flight time.
  • Material and Stiffness: With large diameters, blade stiffness becomes important to avoid flutter and ensure good response. Reinforced materials (e.g., glass fiber) are often used, which are stiffer but can be more brittle than standard polycarbonate.
  • Performance Data: Long-range pilots often base their choice on detailed thrust and efficiency tests (g/W), looking for the optimal motor-propeller combination for their machine.

Remember the absolute necessity of matching large props with appropriately sized low-KV motors capable of spinning them efficiently without overheating.

Building a long-range drone or a cinelifter requires careful selection of every component, and propellers play a key role. Wondering if 2-blade or 3-blade props are better for your 7-inch long-range drone? Which props will provide the greatest efficiency and longest flight time? Or maybe you need advice on which Gemfan, HQProp, or T-Motor props will work best on your heavy cinelifter?
