Drone GPS Systems

A GPS module is a small but extremely useful device for your FPV drone or other unmanned aerial vehicle. By using signals from satellites (such as GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou), it allows for precise determination of the drone's position in space. In this category, you will find various GPS modules that open up new possibilities and significantly increase flight safety.

The main functions enabled by GPS modules include:

  • Return-to-Home (RTH): Automatic return of the drone to the starting point in case of video or RC signal loss.
  • GPS Rescue: An emergency mode (e.g., in Betaflight) that helps bring the drone back towards you in case of problems.
  • Position Hold: Maintaining a stable position in the air by the drone.
  • Waypoint Navigation: Planning and executing autonomous missions (mainly in iNav).
  • Finding a Lost Drone: Saving the last known GPS position facilitates searching.

GPS modules are particularly popular in Long Range drones, larger Cinematic machines, and FPV wings (airplanes). Some modules have an integrated compass (magnetometer), which further improves the drone's orientation.

When choosing a GPS module for your drone, consider several important factors to ensure optimal performance and compatibility:

  • Size and Weight: Especially important in smaller builds. Choose a compact and lightweight module that you can easily fit on the frame.
  • Chipset and Sensitivity: Newer generation chipsets (e.g., popular Ublox M8, M10 series) generally offer faster fix acquisition (connecting to satellites) and tracking of more satellites simultaneously, resulting in greater accuracy and reliability.
  • Supported Satellite Systems: Modules supporting multiple systems (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou) generally provide a more stable and faster position reading, especially in challenging conditions (e.g., between buildings, in valleys).
  • Integrated Compass (Magnetometer): Necessary for the precise operation of navigation functions (like Waypoints in iNav) and stable flight in modes utilizing direction (e.g., more accurate RTH). Remember that the compass is sensitive to magnetic interference (power cables, motors) and requires proper placement and calibration. For the basic GPS Rescue mode in Betaflight, a compass is often not required.
  • Update Rate: A higher value (e.g., 10Hz) means smoother tracking of the drone's position by the flight controller.
  • Protocol and Connector: Ensure the module is compatible with your flight controller (most communicate via a UART port using NMEA or UBLOX protocols) and check the required supply voltage (e.g., 5V).

It is worth choosing modules from proven manufacturers such as Holybro, Flywoo, or HGLRC to be sure of quality and support.

Adding GPS to an FPV drone opens up new possibilities, but choosing and configuring the module can raise questions. Wondering which module will be best for your long range drone?
